It's our second Fic Rec Monday in the Favorite Authors Project, where I put together a rec list with works by specific fic writers instead of by theme or fandom. This week we're talking about thehoyden, who has been writing awesomeness in all your favorite fandoms (okay, maybe not all of your favorite fandoms, but a lot of mine) for forever. They're also a semi-regular guest on the /Report, one of my favorite podcasts (coming at you with fangirl awesomeness since 2011).

I'm sharing ten of my favorite fics by thehoyden. (Keep in mind these are just my favorites. They also fic for fandoms I don't read often, like: Hikaru no Go, Naruto, Due South, Inception, etc.)

DCU

Contingency
Bruce Wayne/Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Alfred Pennyworth
Summary: "I didn't plan for this," Bruce says after a few minutes, and he sounds bewildered.
Rec Notes: Dick moves back into the manor for reasons (oh, Alfred) and fails upward into a relationship with Bruce. Because of course he does. All the found family feels in this one.

Dresden Files

Chacun à son goût
Harry Dresden/John Marcone
Summary: "Perhaps we'll make an aficionado of you yet."
Rec Notes: Harry gets hired to exorcise a ghost in an opera house. He accidentally interrupts Marcone's business. Fake dating ensues. Also OPERA.

Hawaii Five-0

Down the Shore Everything's All Right
Steve McGarrett/Danny "Danno" Williams, Kona | Kono Kalakaua, Grace Williams, Rachel Williams, Hurt/Comfort
Summary: There's a better than average chance that Danny is getting crazier by association -- and he wouldn't change it for the world (although he could do without the head injuries, thanks).
Rec Notes: Steve and Rachel bonding over Danny's unconscious body in a hospital room is maybe one of the more surreal experiences of his life. Quippy and short, with a really great portrayal of Grace (the writers in H50 fandom have a tendency to write her like they do on the show, which is to say: nothing like an actual human child).

Hockey RPF

King and Lionheart
Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin, Sergei Gonchar, Colby Armstrong, Mario Lemieux, Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins Ensemble, Evgeni Nabokov, Arranged Marriage, Marriage of Convenience, Alternate History
Summary: Sidney’s wedding day doesn’t go quite as he’d planned. When he’d bothered to imagine it at all, he’d thought of a nice June wedding in Nova Scotia, outdoors with the sun streaming down. He hadn’t imagined this hurried affair on the tarmac on a rainy and unseasonably cool day in early September, a month after his twenty-fifth birthday.
Rec Notes: Wow. Just. WOW. This is an elaborate alternate universe first conceived when the lockout was looking dire (if you have no idea what I'm talking about that's fine, this is RPF so occasionally it's influenced by, you know, stuff in the real world *waves dismissive hand*). It's arranged marriage/marriage of convience fic, which I can't resist, and it's also friends to lovers, which is lovely when done well. It's done very, very well in this fic.

Merlin

Damsel in Distress
Arthur Pendragon/Merlin Emrys
Summary: Merlin was no expert, but the minstrel troupe's performance in the courtyard seemed to be going fairly well until the dragon landed on the roof of the Great Hall.
Rec Notes: Merlin is incompetently kidnapped, his sorcerer tendencies are exposed, Arthur is his usual recalcitrant self, and Camelot is full of slash dragons. Excellent.

NCIS

Destination
Anthony DiNozzo/Jethro Gibbs, Tobias Fornell, Epistolary, Season/Series 06
Summary: It's like a bad joke: Gibbs and Fornell walk into an elevator. When they walk out, Gibbs says, "Pack your bags, DiNozzo -- you're going on a trip."
Rec Notes: Back in the halcyon days before everything the NCIS writing team did made me want to set my television on fire, I shipped Gibbs/DiNozzo. There was a lot of subtext, okay? And also Mark Harmon. Anyway, Destination has that great, early seasons banter down pat and the epistolary element is lovely. Also, THE ELEVATOR.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Literacy
Julian Bashir/Elim Garak
Summary: "You want me to read to you?" Julian repeated, somewhat taken aback.
Rec Notes: There's a real dearth of DS9 fic (or it's just hard to find after the great migration to AO3 -- I'm not sure, as I wasn't reading DS9 when the fandom was particularly active), which is a shame because it's one of the more interesting Trek worlds to read about. This Garak is, as in canon, both devious and a flirt, which works out well for everyone involved.

Opacity of Paradise
Julian Bashir/Elim Garak, Marriage of Convenience
Summary: "'True enough', my dear doctor, is my favorite kind of lie."
Rec Notes: This fic gets the very particular rhythm of Garak and Bashir's dialogue perfectly and it's a marriage of convenience story, which is one of my bulletproof faves.

Teen Wolf

Darling It Is No Joke
Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski, Scott McCall, Sheriff Stilinski, Alternate Reality, Future Fic
Summary: The first thing Stiles thinks when he opens the door is that it’s not his birthday, but someone has sent him some kind of cop stripper.
Rec Notes: This takes place in an alternate canon where Stiles has just moved back to Beacon Hills after college and Derek has just moved back to town and is working as a deputy. Because Deputy Derek. This fic has all the things I loved about early TW fanworks and if you want to quibble about the characterization then too bad, because it's definitely how we saw things going back in the early days.

X-Men: First Class
